The good-natured jabs, slams and teasing are just part of the hilarious competition on season 17 of NBC’s The Voice, but Blake Shelton has raised the bar with a little help from technology.
Following Marybeth Byrd’s brilliantly emotive performance of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” which earned a four-chair turn, the coaches each had an opportunity to try to lure the aspiring young singer to their respective teams…except for Blake.
Coach Kelly Clarkson, the only coach with a block left, had the forethought to use it on Blake so he was unable to recruit the talented vocalist for his team. And perhaps he realized that Kelly was gunning for him because he had a handy trick up his sleeve…or under his red button.
After both John Legend and Gwen Stefani had made their pitch to Marybeth, attempting to lure her to their respective teams, it was Kelly’s turn. Now, Kelly is known to deliver lengthy pitches to the artists, which could be why sometimes she talks so rapidly — she has a lot to say and a short time to say it. As she addressed Marybeth though, music began to play over the speakers.
It was No Doubt — Gwen Stefani’s former band — and the song was “Don’t Speak.”
At first, it seemed as if it was a technical glitch causing the coaches to have a fun chuckle. “Are they trying to tell you to be quiet, Kelly,” John asked. But then it happened again and Kelly suspected she was being duped. Of course, she also assumed it was Blake.

It just seemed too bizarre to be chance, but it also seemed too crazy for even Blake. But it wasn’t.
Thanks to a clever camera angle, the television audience was able to see that it was Blake tapping his button that triggered the chorus of “Don’t Speak” every time Kelly began to speak.
It wasn’t until contestant Kiara Brown’s performance that the coaches learned the country superstar’s scam. Things could have gotten ugly as Gwen approached her handsome fella, calling him a liar and a cheater, but Kelly got the last laugh quoting Elf: “You sit on a throne of lies.”
The teams are filling up with an incredible amount of talent for season 17 of The Voice. Be sure to tune in to see how far Marybeth and Kiara go, and what Blake pulls next.
