If anyone could be everywhere and do everything during the 53rd annual CMA Awards, it’s Carrie Underwood. And it wasn’t enough for the superstar to just sing any ol’ song from her Cry Pretty album. The beautiful blonde artist showcased another dimension of her incredible talent by giving a dramatic performance of the smokey, sultry “Drinking Alone.”
Dressed in a black romper with a matching jacket and lace pants along with a matching fedora, Carrie descended stairs, making her way to a makeshift speakeasy where her band waited. There, she shed her jacket and showed off the work she puts in when wearing Calia instead of fedora.
The quirky nature of “Drinking Alone” with its uniquely punctuated vocal, showcases how much control Carrie truly has over her delivery. Vacillating between the staccato verses and the soaring chorus would be an insurmountable challenge for a lesser singer, but for the American Idol winner, it seemed as effortless as her perfect vibrato.
This wasn’t Carrie’s only time to sing during the three-hour show. She kicked off the CMA Awards with her special guest hosts, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, before their song became a medley of hits from women of country through the years.
Although hopes were high that the Oklahoma country star would take home the big win of the night, Entertainer of the Year, the trophy actually went to her fellow Okie, Garth Brooks.
