Here’s a little country music “T.” Pop country is here to stay, and the reality is, it’s been here…to stay since the 1950s when “The Nashville Sound” was developed. Artists like Patsy Cline, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Floyd Kramer, Glen Campbell, Ronnie Milsap and Kenny Rogers helped to grow the sub-genre that is thriving today. And, here’s some more reality, some of it is really good, including the new collaboration between Dan + Shay and pop music star Justin Bieber, “10,000 Hours.”
Composed by Nashville songwriters Dan Smyers, Shay Mooney, Justin Bieber, Jessie Jo Dillon and Jordan Reynolds, this lilting melody provides an infectious foundation for a lyric that is a sweet, less than a three-minute vow of love. As the singer pledges to spend “10,000 hours or the rest of my life” getting to know the object of his affection, he is also peeling back the layers with questions that are as innocuous as “what’s your favorite song,” to as important as “when you think about your forever now, do you think of me.”
“I’d spend ten thousand hours and ten thousand more / Oh, if that’s what it takes to learn that sweet heart of yours / And I might never get there, but I’m gonna try / If it’s ten thousand hours or the rest of my life / I’m gonna love you (Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh),” they sing in the chorus.
The production on “10,000 Hours” is in line with what we’ve come to expect of monster Dan + Shay hits like “Speechless” and “Tequila,” but there’s also a wonderful toe-tapping lightness to it that only amplifies the overall happy, heartfelt message. In fact, it’s a bit of a breath of fresh air in a sub-genre where heavy handed production and looming arrangements have dominated.

The couples share romantic moments as their husband’s sing the intimate lyrics, before all six of them come together in the end.
