A prayer was answered for Kelly Clarkson when season 18 of The Voice got their first classically trained opera singer, Mandi Thomas, to audition for the show. And it turns out, Mandi is no one trick pony.
From the start of her tenure on the show, Kelly had hoped for a bi-lingual singer, as well as an opera singer, perhaps in reflection of her own classical voice training. When Mandi performed Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman’s “Time to Say Goodbye” during the Blind Auditions, one of Kelly’s prayers was answered. And, as she hoped, the surprise talent has proven to be multi- dimensional. In fact, much like Kelly, Mandi has proven that she has a penchant for country music.
In the Battle Rounds, Mandi and Team Kelly teammate, Sara Collins, took on Martina McBride’s “My Baby Loves Me.” While both women were beautiful vocalists, Mandi began to reveal how vast her ability is, teasing the coaches and viewers with a bit of texture to her otherwise crystalline voice.
But in her most recent performance during the Knockouts, Mandi peeled back another layer of her talent with a gutsy, gospel infused, soaring rendition of Maren Morris’ “My Church.” While the entire performance was not broadcast due to time restrictions fans were treated to enough of the performance to fully understand why Mandi’s position is locked in on Team Kelly. And if you couldn’t tell from the performance, you could probably see it written across Kelly’s stank face as she stood up for the singer.
The Live Rounds for The Voice are up next and much like other live TV programming, the competition will continue virtually from the contestants and coaches’ own homes.
