As much fun as Lauren Alaina looks like she’s having as a competitor on season 28 of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, her tenure on the reality competition show hasn’t been without challenges. Early in the season, her cousin, Holly, was hospitalized in a coma after suffering a brain bleed. She also performed an emotional dance routine dedicated to her stepfather who had passed away the year before. Then she shared that she was enduring the pain of multiple broken ribs while competing. But during the November 11 show, Lauren revealed that she had gone through a break-up just two weeks before the show started.
The always good-natured entertainer joked that she is now dating Dancing With the Stars. “It’s going good,” she laughed.
While competing on the show is hardly a replacement for a relationship or a cure for a broken heart, it is a healthy distraction, especially on weeks where the talented young woman is having to learn two dances.
For girl group/boy band night, Lauren and her professional partner, Gleb Savchenko, were tasked with learning the quickstep to “You Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes and the Rumba to “I Want it That Way.” To the untrained eye, both dances seemed flawless, but to the critical eye of judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, Carrie Ann Inaba and guest judge Joey Fatone, there were minor errors.
Following are the judge’s comments for their quickstep:
Len: “I love that, Gleb, you put in a spin-turn and then that lovely chase double lock. Once you do things like that, I’m a sucker for it. know there was one or two little moments during that that weren’t quite dead on point.” (Audience booing) “Oh, shut up. Oh my God, what’s the matter with you people. You want to boo, boo properly. I liked it enough. I liked it.”
Joey: “It’s not easy to do something like that, especially with the quickstep and then all of the sudden you’re switching it and you’re rising and falling and gliding. I do agree with Len, there were a couple of things with the foot, walking down the stairs, but overall, I thought it was really good.”
Bruno: “The good thing is, you really captured the feel, the joy of a timeless classic perfectly. The thing is, it was a very, very complex, very, very difficult routine and the precision on the quickstep has to be absolutely spot on and there was a couple of times, I agree with Len, it wasn’t quite there. It was slightly behind and you still have to remember, when you finish a move, don’t kind of stumble, Ginger Rogers, darling.”
Carrie Ann: “I don’t know what you guys are talking about. I thought it was fantastic. A lot of content, I thought the hold and the frame, everything about it was great. I love the way you dance, you give it your full every single time. I loved it.”
Lauren and Gleb earned a respectable score of 34 out of 40.
Next up were the judge’s comments for their rumba:
Carrie Ann: “I can’t believe how far you’ve grown. Like, you’ve really come so far, I can’t believe this is you from week one. The growth is phenomenal. You’re so in tune with your body. There’s such a beautiful confidence and sensuality that is being exposed here. There’s also a vulnerability mixed with the power. Its’ really an amazing artistic explosion of a lot of things. Be careful, sometimes you hold your breath when you hit a move because I know you’re squeezing and you don’t want to lose balance, but try to let it breathe so you don’t look so stiff.”
Len: “You’ve had a quickstep and you’ve had a rumba, both ends of the dance spectrum. Really tough call. I liked it very much. Lovely, fluid movement. Sure-footed. Well done.
Joey: “If it was based on the song, no disrespect, I would give it a zero. I’m kidding. It’s a Backstreet/NSYNC thing. However, the dance, what you guys did was amazing. It was really, really good.
Bruno: “Smokey, sultry, smoldering. I tell you, if you like your rumba hot, place your orders now because Lauren delivers.”
Lauren and Gleb’s score increased slightly to a 36.
At the end of the night, though, Lauren and Gleb found themselves in the bottom two with Sean Spicer and Jenna Johnson. Fortunately, the decision fell on Bruno and Carrie Ann and they chose to send Sean home.
Lauren and Gleb will compete in next week’s semi-final rounds and every bite counts, so tune in and show our country girl some love!
