When Anita Cochran was diagnosed with triple positive, invasive carcinoma breast cancer in August 2017, her world came to a halt. The Michigan native was forced into a world she knew nothing about but quickly came to learn more than anyone would want to.

It all happened in the blink of an eye. One day Anita, was sitting on her couch, watching TV when she scratched an itch under her arm and noticed a lump. Days later she learned she had breast cancer. Undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatments and a double mastectomy forced her off the road, playing guitar with Ty Herndon and Terri Clark, and out of work.

Anita, known best for her 1997 No. 1 hit “What if I Said” with Steve Wariner, used every ounce of strength within to fight through her diagnosis and the side effects that were near crippling.

During her journey, Anita discovered the need to inspire and help others going through a similar fight. As she was facing her own battle, she an penned an inspiring song to help herself and others continue the fight. The result is the uplifting “Fight Like a Girl,” about not letting the disease get the best of you and fighting on.

“‘Cause I’m gonna fight like a girl / I’m gonna take my stand  / I’m gonna throw every punch and dodge every blow I can / you ain’t gonna see me cry / no not one tear / I’m gonna claim my strength, my faith and have no fear / ’cause I’m a fighter, I’m a survivor, you ain’t gonna change my world / ’cause I’m gonna fight like a girl,” she sings in the chorus.

What followed, was a deeply emotional and motivating video that depicts Anita in a boxing ring, punching and fighting every step of the way. Produced by the singer herself, the video was a labor of love in which she hopes others will see and find the will to keep fighting.

“My story is about my battle with breast cancer. But there are so many people out there who are trying to push past barriers and that’s what this song is about,” said Anita. “Everyone is battling something. It’s for all of us. I hope it can help give strength and encouragement. Maybe my journey can help people. I feel like that’s my purpose now.”

“Fight Like a Girl” is available for digital download . Friends of Anita have set up a GoFund Me page to help the singer with her vast medical bills.
