Carrie Underwood’s “Smoke Break” Was Almost “Coffee Break”

Chris DeStefano had a really good year. The hit songwriter was one of the big winners of the night at 54th Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards as four of his songs were given honors.

“Nothin’ Like You,” Dan + Shay’s No. 1 hit was one of the top five songs of the year and Luke Bryan’s “Kick The Dust Up” was award-winning, as were Carrie Underwood’s “Little Toy Guns” and “Smoke Break.” DeStefano co-wrote “Nothin’ Like You” and “Kick the Dust Up” with ASCAP Songwriter of the Year, Ashley Gorley.

“Little Toy Guns” and “Smoke Break” were co-writes with Hillary Lindsey (and Underwood) and before the awards, DeStefano told us a fun little fact about the latter– it was almost something completely different.

“We wrote that and we were literally taking a coffee break when we wrote that song and ‘coffee break’ did not sound like nearly as good of a title,” he said.

And we couldn’t agree more.

And now, every single time we listen to the song we will think of coffee break.
