10 Country Singers Who Competed On “Nashville Star”

In an age of
musical competition shows, we have to remember those who came before. On March 8, 2003, Nashville Star premiered on USA (and later moved to CMT) and shined a light on a few up-and-comers who would become mainstays in the country world.

During its six season run, the show featured hosts such as LeAnn Rimes, Nancy O’Dell, Wynonna, Jewel and Billy Ray Cyrus. It also saw a diverse list of judges including Blake Shelton (who would later go on to coach another famous competition), Randy Owen of Alabama, Phil Vassar, John Rich and Jewel.

However, the show never showed the results of its competitors, namely, American Idol. Blake made a blunt statement about this to the New York Times in 2007.

“I think it’s disastrous that there hasn’t been a winner to go on to be a consistent star in Nashville,” he told the publication. “In order for the show to have credibility and for it to take another step, we need a Carrie Underwood to come out of it.”

Well, a ‘Carrie Underwood’ did come out of it. But she placed third. And then you married her. That got awkward.

10 Country Singers Who Competed On “Nashville Star”:

1. Miranda Lambert

You may have heard of this up-and-comer. The songstress competed on the first season of Nashville Star and came in third. Word on the street is she’s got some real potential.

2. Chris Young

You may remember this Season 4 winner too. He’s gone on to perform, like, thousands of No. 1s.

3. Kacey Musgraves

In 2007, 18-year-old Kacey from Golden, Texas, came in seventh on Season 5. She would go on to win some Grammys and stuff.

4. Buddy Jewell

Season 1 winner Buddy Jewell had two top five singles after taking his title.

5. George Canyon

This seven time Canadian Country Music Awards winner came in second on Season 2.

6. Brad Cotter

After winning Season 2, Brad’s debut album reached No. 4 on the U.S. Country sales chart.

7. Lance Miller

You may not be buying Lance’s records, but you own his songs. Since competing on the show, Lance has built a successful songwriting career and is responsible for songs such as Jerrod Niemann’s “Drink to That All Night Long,” Thomas Rhett’s “Beer With Jesus” and Michael Ray’s “Real Men Love Jesus.”

8. Jared Ashley

Went on to release several projects. However, you probably remember that he also accused John Rich of assault.

9. Whitney Duncan

Whitney began as a solo act, releasing one album on Warner Bros. She’s currently one-third of the trio Post Monroe.

10. Ashlee Hewitt

A year after Whitney Duncan, Ashlee competed on the sixth and final season of the show. She’s one another third of Post Monroe and wife to Jesse Whitley (son of the late Keith) and Lorrie Morgan.
