What’s the old adage? It’s not a country song until your wife leaves you, your dog runs away and your truck breaks down?
While I don’t agree with that, I do think that dogs are a integral part of life and therefore worthy of all the songs and praise we can give them.
There are a lot of popular songs that mention dogs or talk about dogs, but there are few that are actually about dogs. For instance, I love and completely agree with Carrie Underwood‘s “The More Boys I Meet” … the more I love my dog, but the song is really about how bad dating is. Here’s a look at six songs that meet my “about the dog” test:
1. “Feed Jake”
The Pirates of the Mississippi go back and forth between verses about how tough life is and the sentiment to feed jake. I say this is a dog song because the main thought is to take care of the pub, despite what happens to his owner.
2. “Ol’ Red”
I would argue that this is one of the best country songs every written, recorded and released. In concert, Blake Shelton still kills this song about a jailhouse dog who inadvertently helps him escape.
3. “Move it on Over”
OK, hear me out. This could fall in the “song that mentions a dog” category, but I disagree. The entire song is talking to a dog, which — admit it — we’ve all done. And I’ll use any excuse to add a Hank Williams song.
4. “Like My Dog”
Billy Currington just wants to find unconditional love, like the type he gets from his dog. Don’t we all?
5. “Little Boys Grow Up and Dogs Get Old”
This is a tear-jerker. It was included on Target exclusive of Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights album, but it’s definitely worth the buy if you’ve ever loved and lost a pup.
6. “Cracker Jack”
Leave it to Dolly Parton to immortalize a dog perfectly. She tells the story of Cracker Jack, her best friend, in this classic.
