In Honor of the Release of Her Movie “Dumplin,'” Dolly Parton Shares, wait for it….a Recipe for Chicken & Dumplins

In honor of the release of “Dumplin,” the Netflix movie starring Jennifer Aniston for which Dolly Parton wrote and recorded the soundtrack, Dolly is giving an extra treat to her fans.

The country icon took to Instagram to announce the release of the movie, but she also, in true Dolly form, shared a recipe for, you guessed it, Chicken & Dumplin’s. How apropos.

“Dumplin'” is out TODAY on Netflix and if you wanna treat yourself to dinner and a movie here’s one of my recipes that’s just perfect for the occasion, Chicken & DUMPLIN’s ya’ll,” she wrote on the post.

Dolly’s Chicken & Dumplin’s Recipe


1 (3-Pound) Stewing Hen
2 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
3/4 Teaspoon Salt
1 Onion, Peeled and left whole
1/4 Cup chopped celery leaves
2 Cups all purpose flour, plus extra for kneading
1/2 Teaspoon Baking soda
3 Tablespoons Vegetable Shortening
3/4 Cup Milk


Combine Chicken, 2 teaspoons of salt, and 2 quarts of water in a dutch oven
Cover, bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium. Add pepper, onion, celery leaves.
Simmer chicken until it falls away from the bone.

Remove the chicken and onion from pot and strain. Discard onion and celery leaves. Set Chicken aside to cool.

When cooled, remove chicken from bones and cut into 1-inch pieces. Set aside. Discard skin and bones. Raise heat to high and bring broth to a boil.

Combine flour, baking soda and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt in medium bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in milk until moist. Turn Dough out onto a floured surface and lightly knead about 5 minutes.

Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into 1 1/2 inch squares. Drop dough into the boiling broth. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10 minutes. Stir gently. Add Chicken back to the pot and stir until it is heated through.

Serve warm.
