Faith Hill Calls For Change to the Mississippi State Flag

Faith Hill is speaking out for change amidst protests to bring an end to police brutality and against racial injustice for the Black Lives Matter Movement.

As the confederate flag was banned from NASCAR in early June, due to it’s offensive nature to the black community, Faith is asking for a change to the flag of her home state, Mississippi.

The Mississippi flag consists of horizontal bands of blue, white, and red, with a red square in the upper left corner bearing the Confederate battle flag. Former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryan has also advocating for a change to the flag, which was adopted in 1894.

In a series of Tweets, Faith directed her message to the Mississippi legislature.

“To the Mississippi legislature: It’s time to change the state flag. I am a proud MS girl and I love my home state,” she wrote. “When I think of Mississippi, I think of my mom and dad, the church I grew up in, high school football, and where I fell in love with music.”

“Now, it is time for the world to meet the Mississippi of today and not the Mississippi of 1894 (when the MS legislature voted on the current flag),” she continued. “I understand many view the current flag as a symbol of heritage and Southern pride, but we have to realize that this flag is a direct symbol of terror for our black brothers and sisters.”

Earlier in June, NASCAR made the move to prohibit the confederate flag from all future NASCAR races after the only African American elite driver, Bubba Wallace, noted it’s offensiveness and called for it to be banned.

“The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry,” NASCAR said in a statement. “Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”

Faith concluded her message by urging the legislature to vote on a new flag, “one that represents ALL of the citizens of Mississippi.”
