“Before I met Nic and got married, I sucked at relationships. I couldn’t give myself to a relationship. But I’d write songs about love and relationships,” Urban said according to Billboard. “I remember writing ‘Somebody Like You’ and I remember playing it for my girlfriend at the time and she just looked at me and said, ‘You’re a f*****g hypocrite.’ And I couldn’t argue. I realized I was writing from the place of the person I wanted to be. It was only a song, but my real life was a disaster. The only thing that’s changed in my life is that I’ve more so become the person I was trying to be.”
