At a time when the world seems almost too heavy to process, Kenny Chesney shines a light of inspiration with his upbeat new song, “Happy Does.”
The third single from his newest album, Here and Now, and the follow-up to the chart-topping title track, “Happy Does,” is a toe-tapping, lilting melody that harkens to those boardwalk grooves that have become synonymous with Kenny’s music. A shuffle-y beat and a jangly tambourine nudge the acoustic guitar along in the verses until the arrangement widens in the chorus and becomes a singalong moment just waiting for live concerts to return.
The “happy is as happy does” hook puts a positive and constructive spin on Forest Gump’s “stupid is as stupid does,” but it also supports the lyrics of the verses and chorus that celebrates a life of simplicity, hope and optimism.
“Happy is as happy does, / Grab a six-string, find a rope swing / Hang a palm tree in your truck / Drink a beer just because / Steal a slow dance in a rainstorm / And a kiss from who you love / Laugh and live with a half full cup / When it’s all black clouds, find the sun / ‘Cause happy is as happy does.”
Kenny says, “I don’t believe in preaching, and I sure don’t want to tell anyone how to live, but right now, I think we can all use something to lift us up…With all this unknown and all this who knows, it felt like the song people were going to need this summer. The melody feels good, and the track makes you smile! So, ‘Happy Does’ is a pretty good post-it note when you’re having a bad day, or even just a day.”
In an uneasy world, “Happy Does” is musical mind over matter.
