Soon after Kenny Chesney kicked off his Trip Around the Sun Tour, the “American Kids” singer is announcing the release of his seventeenth studio album Songs for the Saints.
“So much has happened since I went off the road in 2016,” Kenny said in a statement. “And all of it, in one way or another, has ended up on this record. It’s special to me because of what it says – to me, and for me – about life, the world around us, how fragile it all can be and about somehow still finding the best parts of you, and moving towards them.”
The 12-track offering, co-produced with longtime producer Buddy Cannon, takes a deep dive into Kenny’s soul and what he experienced after Hurricane Irma hit the Virgin Islands. Kenny, who has a house on St. John, was affected by the tragic event and went above and beyond to help the people who reside on the islands. The Tennessee native started the Love for Love City Foundation, which benefits the victims of the hurricane.
“I was at a turning point in my life on so many levels, and then Hurricane Irma hit the Virgin Islands, Kenny added. “But this album isn’t about St. John, so much as it’s about what happened to St. John and all those islands you didn’t see on the news. To just see the devastation and what that does to people is one thing, but then there’s this courage and resilience people find…”
Songs for the Saints, due out July 27, is the first album from the superstar with his new label, Blue Chair/Warner Bros. Kenny was previously signed to Sony’s BNA Records since 1995, where he released 15 albums including All I Need To Know and No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem. He later released 5 albums with Sony’s Columbia Nashville and Blue Chair Records.
“Leaving a place where I’d spent my whole career was both scary and exciting,” Kenny concedes. “There’s that rush of not knowing anything about how this company works, and digging in. But there’s also a special thrill of being around people who truly understand what you’re doing and who are excited to be part of this music. It’s inspiring in all new ways when you have people match your own passion for the music.”
The new album features his current single, “Get Along”, which is currently at No. 15 and rising on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. Written by Josh Osborne, Shane McAnally and Ross Copperman, the new tune simply has Kenny preaching about finding the happier side of life, choosing to do the right thing and of course…get along.
“I feel like I know what this album’s supposed to be, and I know how much it means to me. I wanted to get it just right, before we set a release date… and I think we’ve got it. I’m just glad we’ll have it out in time for me to play some of these songs this summer before the Trip Around the Sun Tour is over.”
The Trip Around the Sun Tour kicked off on April 21 and will have Kenny and friends crossing the country through Aug. 25, when it wraps in Foxborough Massachusetts at Gillette Stadium. Joining Kenny on the road are opening acts Thomas Rhett, Old Dominion and Brandon Lay.
