Mystical, magical and ethereal – that’s the best way to describe Lauren Alaina’s haunting performance during the fourth week of competition on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars.
Dressed in a pale yellow gown, the sides of her hair gently drawn back with a flower, Lauren looked wonderfully youthful and innocent, but her face wore the pained expression of the broken-hearted victim in Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
The routine began with Lauren perched on a swing, as her professional partner, Gleb Savchenko escorted her from her seat and led her through a series of complicated turns and creative poses. After descending the steps onto the main ballroom floor, the couple went into their foxtrot hold and proceeded to glide across the floor, rising and falling as the dance requires and executing beautifully synchronized turns and romantic dips.
Following their performance, Lauren and Gleb retreated to the dancer’s loft in the ballroom where they spoke to co-host Erin Andrews and the country star revealed some heartbreaking news.
“I had a crazy, crazy week,” Lauren said. “My cousin Holly had a brain bleed and she slipped into a coma earlier this week. I went home and we missed a few days of rehearsals. And I was like really stressed and my family told me to come here and I want to dedicate the dance to you, Holly.”
Even under such dire and stressful conditions, Lauren and Gleb dazzled the judges with their performance and earned a 32 (four 8’s) which put them at the top of the leaderboard with three of their fellow competitors.
