Lindsay Ell has joined the tattoo club. The “Criminal” singer recently got her first ink and shares the story behind her decision in a heartfelt post on Instagram.

“Call it a lifeline,” she captions an image of freshly inked skin showing two arrows. “A story. A legend. Pointed towards my heart, pushed forward by my past. Unfinished by design. To be completed as life unfolds…every album gets its own mark. As @kristianbush told me before I walked in, ‘you get to have some scars you choose.’ And this one I did. Hello, tattoo world.”

The singer has had a whirlwind year releasing two albums. Lindsay’s debut album, The Project, recently celebrated its one-year anniversary having been revealed on Aug. 11, 2017. Her follow-up, The Continuum Projectdropped in May. While it was never intended to be released as it featured Lindsay’s reinterpretation of John Mayer’s 2006 album, Continuum, it helped Lindsay find her footing for her debut. She reflects on the journey of both in a new video with her producer, Sugarland’s Kristian Bush.

“It is the year anniversary of The Project,” she says in a new vlog episode. “And I have someone special here to celebrate it with us.”

Producer Kristian Bush then joins Lindsay, asking if she remembers the moment The Project was released.

“It’s crazy to look back on pictures or video clips from that day. That whole week that we were out, flying around the country, zig-zagging to three different cities a day sometimes,” she admits.

The clip includes footage of Lindsay buying her album in Target and later that day realizing The Project was No. 1 on the iTunes country charts. Currently on the road as part of Sugarland’s Still the Same Tour, the singer tells Kristian that her birthday wish for her album is “that we’ll find the inspiration to make record two together.”
