Lindsay Ell is one of country music’s fastest rising female artists of 2018. With the release of her latest album, The Project, produced by Kristian Bush, Lindsay has garnered praise from fans, fellow colleagues and the country music industry alike.
While her music speaks for itself, we wanted to learn more about the girl from Canada, who can shred a guitar better than most of the boys around. She started playing guitar at the age of 8.
One Country tapped Lindsay to be our inaugural artist featured in the Spotlight series, which delves into the career and life of country’s standout personalities.
On learning guitar:
“I started playing guitar when I was 8-years-old. The piano actually was my first instrument, when I was 6. It was a lot cooler to play Shania Twain songs on the guitar, so my dad put my first guitar in my hands, because he plays pretty much everything with strings on it and the first lick he taught me was “Stairway to Heaven.” The minute I learned “Stairway to Heaven” I’m like, ‘Alright, I got this thing. What else can I play.”
On being a female in country music:
“I think in any industry females need to work harder. I feel like there are not as many females as male artists recording music. And I feel like females are recording music that is so great—that is connecting with fans and fans are wanting to seek it out. When we look at the ratios of how many females are being played and how many females are being playlisted, it’s not even. That’s just a fact. However, I feel like it’s a really good time for females. Right now, things are slowly starting to change and fans are wanting to hear more of it. I’m a believer. I’m all about this girl power moment.”
On touring with Brad Paisley:
“I’m the estrogen holding down the stage. It was funny the first show I played with Brad, it was when he was till doing his college tour. It was the first time we opened up for him and he asked that night, he was like, ‘Does Lindsay want to come up on stage and jam with me.’ I was super nervous, but of course I’m like, “Absolutely, hundred percent, I’ll be there.” I walk on stage, not knowing at all what was going to happen, but I was trading licks with Brad Paisley. It was a moment, even from a little girl, that I didn’t think was going to happen.”
Be sure and check out Part 2 with Lindsay, coming Feb. 22 on the One Country YouTube channel.
