Luke Bryan’s New “Out Of Nowhere Girl” is a Moodier, Sexier “Play It Again”

As Luke Bryan prepares to drop his sixth studio album What Makes You Country, he’s giving fans a new track every other week or so.

Admittedly, following up albums as massively successful as 2015s Kill the Lights and 2013’s Crash My Party is a difficult task, but based on the songs Bryan has released so far, I’m not sure what to think. The first single off the album, “Kill The Lights” is not great. “Most People Are Good” is actually pretty boundary-pushing for Bryan.

The final release before the album drops on December 8, “Out Of Nowhere” seems to be a moodier tune that could have been found on Crash My Party. Written by Bryan, Dallas Davidson and Ashley Gorley it has nothing to do with Bryan’s actual life as a happily married family man.

I recognize that singers, country music singers even more than others, are storytellers, but the way this song is presented feels like listeners should believe this Bryan’s tale to tell– he’s at a party, a hot girl appeared and he has to take her home.

Bryan is the king of sexy country music concert anthems, but this song paired with “Kill The Lights” is playing into that persona a little too much for me.

I think Bryan is at his best when he’s singing about what is life his actually like. Those songs (“Fast,” “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day,” and “Drink A Beer”) work on the radio too. And they have more longevity because they actually mean something.

What Makes You Country drops on December 8.
