Recently, via his YouTube channel, Merle Haggard‘s youngest son Ben shared a touching video of himself singing his late father’s “Silver Wings.”

A song about heartbreak and loss, the 1969 classic presents heart-rending lines like, “‘Don’t leave me,’ I cry. Don’t take that airplane ride. But you locked me out of your mind, left me standing here behind,” which Ben portrays with true emotional depth.

A musician in his own right, Ben gave a simple, yet extremely soulful, heartfelt and sincere performance of the song, staying true to the somber tone his father originally set for the song.

Merle would be proud.
