So many country stars are “leaking” new music out to social media and streaming services these days, and Miranda Lambert is one of them. With a new album on the horizon, the singer- songwriter has been giving fans little samples of what to expect on the project. And her most recent gem is a rocking little number called “Mess With My Head.”

From a production perspective, the song is more progressive than almost anything we’ve heard from Miranda in the past. It’s actually quite impressive how producer Jay Joyce generated a staccato, punctuated groove, reminiscent of punk/pop/rock/new wavers The Police and The Cars, while still retaining the subtle Texas twang that gives Miranda her signature style. Even after adding effects to her vocal, it is undeniably Lambert and the technical twists just make the end result fun and audacious.

Lyrically, “Mess With My Head,” is quintessential Miranda Lambert.

I let you mess with my, mess with my head / I let you mess with my, mess with my bed / Waking up to a wreck with blue jeans on the floor / If it ain’t love then I like it better than before / I let you mess with my, mess with my head / I let you mess with my, mess with my heart,” she sings in the chorus.

Co-written with Natalie Hemby and Luck Dick, filled with clever imagery and the kind of tongue-in-cheek innuendo that leaves you asking, “Who is the good guy and who is the bad guy?” Yes, someone messed with her head, but she did “let” them. Does that mean she wanted to be messed with or did it happen before she realized it? Was this “messing” a good thing or a bad thing…because it doesn’t sound altogether dreadful.

So many questions, Miranda!
