Who would have thought something as simple as wearing a face mask would provoke an adult to spew hate and venom at a perfect stranger? It seems far-fetched, but singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash assure us that it is very much an actual scenario that her daughter experienced recently in Nashville.

Rosanne shared the heartbreaking incident on Twitter. (Warning: some of the verbiage in this quote is of an adult nature).

“My daughter lives in Nashville & wore her mask to buy groceries,” she writes. “Guy yells at her: ‘Liberal pussy!’ Back story: she nearly died of H1N1. She was in the ICU for a week, on a ventilator for 3 days. She CANNOT get covid. The ignorance & hatred is so painful. She’s trying to survive.”

The nearly 8,000 response have been overwhelmingly supportive. Actress Patricia Arquette had a spicy thought to share: “Imagine some idiot calling Johnny Cash’s granddaughter a pussy. May the ghost of Johnny cash hound him all of his days!!”

Local and national radio personalities like Lisa Manning and Suzanne Alexander have weighed in on the topic, as well as fellow singer-songwriter, Gretchen Peters.

I’m so sorry to hear that, my God…I wish that the choice to wear a mask, or not to, was NOT so political now. And no, that does not sound like typical Nashville behavior, but…#StayStrong #StaySafeNashville,” shared Manning.

“she should’ve videotaped him! That would’ve shut him up. So much ignorance and hate over the mask. It’s awful to see how people are turning on each other,” added Alexander.

Many had their own experiences to share and commiserate with Rosanne’s daughter.

“Rosanne my uncle got yelled at at a wine store in Franklin for wearing a mask and the sign outside said everyone in the store was required to wear one. The employee had his around his neck till my uncle walked in,” wrote a fan.

The incident took place in a Kroger grocery store in an affluent area of Nashville.

In many municipalities, wearing a protective or preventative face mask is an option, but for those who are carrying symptoms of COVID-19 or are in high-risk categories, a procedure mask can be a barrier between them and life or death. Whether you choose to wear one or not, who is it harming for someone else to wear a mask?
