Sam Hunt Covers “Girl Crush” During Night Dedicated to Songwriters

Sam Hunt is a songwriter by trade. Before you were claiming he wasn’t country, you already loved his hits– Kenny Chesney’s “Come Over,” Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight” and Keith Urban’s “Cop Car.”

And on a night when the Nashville Chapter of the Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) hosted their inaugural AIMP Awards, it was no surprise that Hunt stole the show with his cover of “Girl Crush.”

Hunt performed the GRAMMY-nominated tune in tribute to Hillary Lindsey, the AIMP Independent Songwriter of The Year and one-third of the genius behind “Girl Crush.”

The awards also paid tribute to the top independent publisher and song from 2015, as voted on by AIMP members. “Girl Crush” also took home the Song of the Year award.

Surprisingly, Hunt isn’t the first country music man to cover the Little Big Town hit, Eric Church did it at the Ryman Auditorium last summer– with Little Big Town looking on.

And then there was that time Kelsea Ballerini sang “Girl Crush” with Little Big Town while Taylor Swift did an interpretive dance.
