See The Smokey Video For Sara Evans’ “Marquee Sign”

Sara Evans’ bombastic single, “Marquee Sign” just got a video, but I can’t help but feel that it is a leftover video from the early 2000s.

The video highlights the title of the song as Evans dramatically dances in a street as smokey as the bar she sings in. The marquee literally spells out both the meaning and intent of the song: I wish there were a warning sign. Scenes of young couples flash across the screen as t-shirts spell out the evil that lurks behind the person in phrases like, “I am an alcoholic,” “I will leave you” “I will abuse you”, and ” I cannot be trusted.”

The literal visualizations of lyrics, jump cuts and general cinematography feel more like something from a long-gone era and lean towards the dejected, simplistic thinking of a person scorned. The song is more clever, more pointed, than the video lets on.
