Sissy Spacek Accepts Artist of a Lifetime Award For an “Under the Weather” Loretta Lynn

The ladies of country music were honored Wednesday night (Oct. 17) by CMT at their annual Artists of the Year celebration. The evening was the first time that all women were celebrated with the honor.

While Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman and Karen Fairchild and Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott were given the title of Artists of the Year, it was Loretta Lynn that was receiving the special honor of Artist of a Lifetime.

However, as it came time for actress Sissy Spacek, who portrayed Loretta in the movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” to bestow the award upon her friend, she announced that Loretta was unable to attend due to illness.

“She’s so sorry she couldn’t be here tonight, she’s a little under the weather. I saw her earlier today and she was so excited about this award. She said, ‘what are you going to wear tonight Sissy?’ I said, ‘Well, I don’t know yet Loretta. And she said, “Well, you want to wear one of my gowns.” That’s the kind of girlfriend she is,” Sissy said as the audience broke into applause.

But then Sissy got choked up as she continued honoring the country legend.

“From the moment we met, she’s been my cheerleader, my sister, my best friend. And it’s still like that almost 40 years later. It’s my honor to accept her award—Loretta Lynn is our 2018 CMT Artist of a Lifetime. Well done Loretta, well done.”
