TLC’s “Waterfalls” is one of those songs in my life that comes with a lot of memories attached to it. The single cassette tape was the first mainstream, Top 40 music I ever bought. Before that, I listened to all oldies.

Then, my senior year in high school, a motivational speaker came to our school the first week of school. This woman wore an all white suit with her hair in an up-do. No group has ever been less interested in listening to a speaker, until she took out her keyboard and sang TLC’s “Waterfalls” with the rap part. She sang an encore and one of my friends stood on a cafeteria lunch table and danced. She didn’t get it in trouble because it was all so Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer from “Saturday Night Live.”

Anyway, “The Voice” coaches covered the tune recently to gear up for the upcoming season of the reality TV singing competition and honestly, it was kind of cool to hear Blake Shelton sing TLC. Alicia Keys covered the rap part beautifully.

It still wasn’t as good as the motivational speaker in my high school cafeteria though.

The original video is still so good and so bad.
