Thomas Rhett Joins Dad, Rhett Akins, To Perform First Song They Ever Wrote Together

Thomas Rhett surprised fans Tuesday night (April 3) when he joined his dad, Rhett Akins, on stage during BMI Presents Rhett Akins & Friends annual songwriters night at Tin Pan South.

Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival, the largest songwriter festival that sees more than 250 songwriters and acts perform over 90 shows in 10 different Music City venues, took place April 3 – 7 in Nashville.

Rhett curated the show, inviting  friends LOCASH, Dustin Lynch, The Warren Brothers and Jon Pardi to perform. To kick off the show, Rhett surprised the crowd by inviting his son, Thomas Rhett to join him on stage.

The father-son duo threw it back to the early days when TR was learning to write songs. The proceeded to pull out an oldie but a goodie, performing a snippet of the very first song they wrote together, when Thomas Rhett was only 7.

We started with a piece of wood. We put on the guitar strings. The next thing you know, you got a song that’s good. One that the whole world wants to sing. We got Keith Richards, Jimmy Paige, now Thomas Chester Rhett.”

Shortly after the surprise appearance, TR kicked off his Life Changes Tour on April 5 in Tulsa, Okla. Joining the “T-Shirt” singer for the tour are openers Brett Young, Carly Pearce, Midland, Russell Dickerson and Jillian Jacqueline.
