Vince Gill has long said Merle Haggard was the greatest country music singer to ever live and since his death, he’s put pen to paper to pay tribute to his hero.

Gill took to the Grand Ole Opry circle to sing ” A World Without Haggard,” a poignant tribute to man who shaped many, many pages of music and even more lives in his 79 years on earth. Gill recounts how he heard the news about Haggard’s death, “I was on the road in Georgia, when I heard Merle passed away / Hell, I thought he’d live forever, he shaped every note I played.”

Gill goes on to sing, “He was my greatest inspiration” before sharing more stories of just how Haggard shaped his life and music.
