Just a year after his death, legends and friends of Merle Haggard gathered in Nashville to take part in Sing Me Back Home: The Music of Merle Haggard at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

The evening would’ve also been Merle Haggard’s 80th birthday.

The almost unbelievable lineup consisted of nearly 30 artists, including Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Toby Keith, Dierks Bentley, The Avett Brothers, John Mellencamp, Loretta Lynn, Jake Owen, Chris Janson, Hank Williams Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kacey Musgraves, Alabama, Ben Haggard and Keith Richards.

One of the biggest surprises of the evening was Kenny Chesney joining longtime friend and collaborator of Haggard’s Willie Nelson on stage for one of their biggest hits, “Pancho and Lefty.” Not sure how Nelson made it through the performance, but he did. And it was wonderful.

(Look at the smile on Chesney’s face– this is a guy who’s done it all and seemingly has it all and he still can’t believe he’s on stage with Nelson.)
