Every year on New Year’s Eve, I stay up to watch the ball drop and every year I’m kind of disappointed. I know it’s a tradition that will always be around, but it’s kind of boring if you think about it. Of course, there are other places across the nation that ring in the New Year in their own special ways, some of which involve live animals. Yes, really.
5 Non-Traditional (And Kind Of Weird) Ball Drops Happening on New Year’s Eve This Year
1. Memphis, Tennessee Guitar Drop
If you’re going to be in Memphis this New Year’s Eve, they’ll be celebrating their 10th Annual Guitar Drop where a 10-foot D’Angelico guitar falls at midnight at the Hard Rock Cafe.
2. Brasstown, North Carolina Possum Drop
This one still gets me. There’s a convenience store in North Carolina that has a live possum lowered as their way of bringing in the New Year. It’s pretty controversial, but they’re doing it again this year despite moral and legal questions.
3. Atlanta, Georgia Peach Drop
This Atlanta, Georgia tradition is a little less odd than the others, but still interesting nonetheless! They’ve been lowering an 800-pound peach since 1989. This year, it will take place at the Flatiron building in Atlanta.
4. Boise, Idaho Potato Drop
I mean, that’s one giant potato! They’ll be lowering this massive potato at the Idaho State Capitol this year.
5. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Peep Drop
Yes, this is real. A 400-pound Peep Chick will be dropped during their annual Peepsfest.
