You were at work/one a date/hanging out with your Grandmom and couldn’t catch your favorite TV show when it aired. That didn’t bother you. You DVR’d the show and will watch it later. But then, you opened your phone and BAM! Spoilers everywhere! Friends, celebrities, even your mother revealed secrets you’ve longed to see answered. But now? Ruined.

That has been a fact of life for far too long. Finally, you can avoid all spoilers with one simple trick.

No, it is not “Stay off the internet”. That’s good advice, but generally unrealistic. You can’t shut down communication because of a TV show.

The answer: filtering. Both Facebook and Twitter offer ways to filter what shows up in your time line by keywords, hashtags, and even emoji’s.

Facebook’s option is Spoiler Shield, an app that allows you to pick which shows you watch, so it knows what spoilers to keep you from. They even offer a version for Google Chrome users that will protect your browsing.

Twitter’s option is more customizable, but requires you to set it up. This tool can also protect you from any content you don’t want to see year round. Twitter offers a step by step guide via their safety page:

When setting it up, be creative. Think of character names you want to avoid, hashtags of the show, and key words. For example, if you want to avoid spoilers for “Game of Thrones”, enter:

  1. Game of Thrones
  2. Jon Snow
  3. Daenerys Targaryen
  4. Sansa Stark
  5. Arya Stark
  6. Dragons
  7. Lannister
  8. George RR Martin
  9. etc.

You can even set up the filters for specific time periods so that you can discuss the show as soon as its over.

Happy Watching!
