Other than Draymond Green and Chance the Rapper, Jimmy Kimmel was the standout audience member of Fergie’s National Anthem performance prior to the NBA All-Star game. As the camera panned to him, he’s seen casually bursting into smile– like everyone else in the arena.

Jimmy took to “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to explain what happened, ” In my defense, I was only smiling because I love the National Anthem so much. That was some arrangement! I didn’t know I was on camera and then… my phone started buzzing.”

And he kind of defended Fergie, “Fergie even apologized and said she tried the song that way because she’s a risk tasker, but here’s the thing- don’t. Don’t take risks when doing brain surgery. Don’t take risks when driving a school bus or singing the National Anthem. Just regular is fine! It’s not like she was intentionally trying to ruin the song. We don’t know what Francis Scott Key was thinking when he wrote the song… maybe he wanted it to be sexy.”
