They say you should never meet your heroes, that you’re just setting yourself up to be let down. But the story of Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash shows otherwise. Sometimes your hero is exactly who you thought they were, and that can make all of the difference.

Kristofferson’s father was an Air Force Major General who expected his son to seek a career in the military. Because of that pressure, Kristofferson joined the Army and earned the rank of Captain before quitting to start a life in music. After leaving the military he found work as a janitor in Johnny Cash’s recording studio.

I’ll let the fellas at “Drunk History” take it from there.

Here’s Kristofferson’s version:

That drunk feller got a few details wrong, but, you know, he was inebriated so you can’t expect too much.

The two ended up building a lifelong friendship and Kristofferson showed up multiple times along Cash performing his songs.

Not all heroes wear capes.
