Justin Timberlake Said ‘Man of the Woods’ is NOT a Country Album and Now, I’m Disappointed?

Just hours before the release of his first album since 2013’s The 20/20 Experience, Justin Timberlake has said Man of the Woods is not a country album.

In a candid Instagram video, filmed while getting his haircut before his Super Bowl Halftime performance, JT said, “The album is named after my son. His name means ‘of the woods.’ Stop telling me I’m making a country album!”

The proclamation comes after Timberlake shared in a press release, “This album is inspired by wife, my son, my family and more than any other album I’ve written– where I’m from. It’s personal.” He said in 2016, of his new project, “I think where I grew up in America has a lot of influence. Growing up in Tennessee — very center of the country — Memphis is known as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll, but also the home of the blues, but Nashville’s right down the street so there’s a lot of country music.”

Also, until now, he never truly said where the album name came from, so the country speculation was real. He’s been talking about country music since owning the CMA Awards in 2015 with Chris Stapleton.

In recent weeks since the album announcement, Justin has shared three new songs from the project, including the duet with Stapleton and he’s right– none of them is country. But, they also don’t seem to be all that influenced by his upbringing, his wife or his son. The lyrics to “Filthy” are literally made up of one verse, a chorus and a bridge. And that’s being kind.

So, now, after weeks of speculating and assuming that Justin was making a country-ish album, I find myself somewhat disappointed that that may not be the case. Which, is not what I thought I would feel.

After circling back to the announcement video for the album, I’m still disappointed and feel like maybe Justin is just confused. I am a country music fan and haven’t spent this much time outside in a decade. He might be more country than me.

Also, everything I can find about the meaning behind the name ‘Silas,’ says it means forest more than wood, but Man of the Woods does sound better.
