Tom Hiddleston‘s relationship with Taylor Swift may have been short-lived, but it was definitely real — or so the actor says.

During an interview for the March issue of GQ, Tom opened up about his whirlwind romance with Taylor saying, “Of course it was real …Taylor is an amazing woman. She’s generous and kind and lovely, and we had the best time.”

Though they met soon after Taylor’s split from DJ Calvin Harris, the two dove head-first into an exciting, vortex of a relationship.

“We decided to go out for dinner, we decided to travel …She’s incredible,” he said.

Throughout their three months of dating, the exes constantly travelled, met each other’s parents, celebrated the Fourth of July together and were the constant talk of the town.

…Sounds tiring.

According to Tom, the two broke up simply because he felt uncomfortable living his life in the spotlight — and at the mercy of paparazzi.

“A relationship in the limelight… A relationship always takes work. And it’s not just the limelight. It’s everything else,” he said.

But, even though the relationship was short-lived and controversial, Tom wouldn’t change a thing.

“You have to fight for love,” he said. “You can’t live in fear of what people might say. You know, you have to be true to yourself.”

Hey, no shame in that.

Oh, and as far as that infamous “I <3 T.S.” shirt goes, Tom is claiming that it was a coincidence.

“The truth is, it was the Fourth of July and a public holiday and we were playing a game and I slipped and hurt my back,” he said. “And I wanted to protect the graze from the sun and said, ‘Does anyone have a T-shirt?’ And one of her friends said, ‘I’ve got this’ (and pulled out the tank top). And we all laughed about it. It was a joke.”

I’m not convinced.
