Episode 4

For those of you keeping score at home, here are the current coaching totals:

Adam: 7

Blake: 7

Shakira: 9

Usher: 9

This is the final week of blind auditions! According to one of the contestants, “It all comes down to this moment.” And like, 40 others in the weeks to follow, but let’s not dwell on that right now.

Kat Perkins // Gold Dust Woman: Kat is singer, who used to be married to a drummer. Her drummer, in her own rock band. After that, she became a nanny. Shakira turns around first and in typical Usher fashion, after hears whatever that certain note he wants to hear, he turns around. Remember: Kat doesn’t want to be a country singer. Usher calls her a country singer. She picks Adam. He’s racking up all the boot-wearing women this season.

Chairs turned: 3

Coach choice: Adam

Gabi Ramirez // The A Team: He’s a youngster, working at a kitchen store. He moved to Fresno to pursue music, but everyone else is in the soccer business. That could be why no questioned his decision to move to FRESNO to pursue music. Is there a hot music scene there? No chairs turned. Usher told him to “live these moments like they are his last.” Usher may not realize he was auditioning for a singing competition and not fighting a terminal disease.

Paula Deanda // The Way: Paula has experience, she released her own single, got a contract with Clive Davis and reminded Carson that she was on TRL once. But, she’s here, so she didn’t make it doing it on her own. It takes a little while, but at the exact same time, Blake and Shakira turn around. Blake is really into her. Adam seems confused more than anything and he never turns around. Shakira noticed some “issues” and knows she can help her with them. Blake learns she is from Texas and Blake has family in Texas, so for some reason that makes the decision for her.

Chairs turned: 2

Coach choice: Blake

Jake Barker// When I Was Your Man: Luke put a video on YouTube and then went to New York, but it didn’t work out. Now, he works at a bar and is working on his music. His performance is going to be his first ever live performance. In a non-shocking turn of events, Usher turns around. Quickly followed by Adam and Shakira. The three battle it out for the never-performed-live singer and ultimately, Usher turns around.

Chairs turned: 3

Coach choice: Usher

Luke Cooper // Radioactive: Luke was an addict, but then became a dad and is now sober. Once, he was in a band, but he quit to be a dad and hang out with farm animals. He’s a nurse and just wants to help people. No chairs turn, which was kind of disappointing. He took the criticism well, but told us that this would be his last attempt at pursuing music.

Ria Eaton // Cups: She’s a youngster and works at the mall. Her family is full of dancers, but she’s going against the grain and pursuing singing. I want to like her, but I really don’t like this song and I wish someone would’ve intervened with her song choice. It’s all too much. Shakira and Blake turn around at the same time. Adam and Usher team up and try to persuade her to choose Shakira. It was cute, but she still chose Blake.

Chairs turned: 2

Coach choice: Blake

Cierra Mickens // Crazy: What! Alaska?! This girl is from Alaska! She has a cute dad, who is super supportive. She lives in Alaska. She’s making the decision between attending law school and pursuing music. Right now, she’s going for the music thing. I’d say, she’s making the right call so far. The girl has some pipes and a great personality. Usher believes in her, too, even though he wanted until the very last possible second to turn around. Shakira loved her so much that she got up from her chair to greet Cierra. She believes in her and her tactics paid off, because she went with Cierra.

Chairs turned: 3

Coach choice: Shakira

Tyler Montgomery // I Wish: I really like his song choice, but no one else really liked him. No chairs turned.

Alaska & Madi // Barton Hollow: The two won a singing competition once. The same competition Blake one once. The duo is really close, but are living apart right now. If they don’t make it tonight, they will break up as a duo. They chose a great song by another duo. The original duo happens to be in the middle of a very public, not a break-up, break-up. So, I hope this isn’t foreshadowing.  Adam recognized this first, but finally Blake turned around. The duo will not have to break up! Blake compared them to Pistol Annies, so of course they went with him.

Chairs turned: 2

Coach choice: Blake

Ddendyl // Stand By Me: Ddendyl tells us right off that her dad plays “an incredible amount of instruments” and she’s from a town with more cows than people. Ddendyl uses a microphone stand, our first this season, and Shakira turns around after one line. She has a really unique voice. Unique in a good way, not in the way that is all you can think to say about something. I’m very confused as to why no one else turned out. Shakira is the dark horse in this race and I think everyone is underestimating her.

Chairs turned: 1

Coach choice: Shakira

Josh Kaufman // One More Try: There are a lot of teasers leading up to his performance, which prepares me for disappointment more than anything. BUT. He was good. Really good. So good that Adam only listened to 7 words before turning around. Eventually, everyone turned. It was an all-out battle for him and Adam reminded him that he turned around first. I guess that won him over. He chose Adam.

Chairs turned: 4

Coach choice: Adam
