On July 23, 1983, some of our favorite outlaws reached the top spot on the Billboard country music chart with their collaboration, “Pancho and Lefty.” Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard chose this song to be the title track on their duet album.

Originally written by Townes Van Zandt, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard brought the song the popularity that it deserved and has since been re-recorded by Steve Earle in 2009.

Watch and Listen magazine recently named Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard’s recording of “Pancho and Lefty” the number one best song ever written, according to a poll of their readers.

And, needless to say, we agree with their conclusion.  It would be hard to believe that these two legendary stars collaborated and did anything less than legendary work.
