In one of the more insane cases of corporate trademarks (which, WOW, we sure have seen some real doozies!) the WWE has trademarked the Bible verse “3:16.” The number was popularized by Stone Cold Steve Austin after he beat Jake “The Snake” Roberts in 1996, leading to a series of merchandise reading “Austin 3:16.” So, I guess that means WWE is more powerful than the Bible?
One of the most quoted verses in the Bible is John 3:16, a verse often quoted by Jake the Snake before he was beaten by Austin. It reads:
We can only speculate as to what the WWE will change it to.
The court, it seems, thought there was enough difference between the wrestler slogan and the Bible verse to give the rights to the numbers to WWE. It does not seem as though churches or religious organizations are in any danger of being sued by WWE for quoting the Bible. However, “3:16” is also a time so at least twice a day every clock in the world will be violating copyright. All clocks can and will be prosecuted.
Stephen Colbert has the whole story and take-down.
