Being a best friend isn’t always easy, but there are a lot of little things you can do to make your most important friendship stronger. While being a good friend is usually intuitive, we sometimes we need a reminder about how to go above and beyond when it comes to friendships.

Here are 10 Ways to Be a Good Best Friend

1. Celebrate the victories, large and small.

Of course, you are excited when your best friend gets a new car but remember to celebrate the little things too. Be happy with her about a 5-pound weight loss, a new title at work or when their child gets an “A” on a report card. These may seem small, but they are important to your friend.

2. Be respectful.

Don’t gossip about your best friend or play dirty when it comes to disagreements. Disagree respectfully and keep in mind there is nothing to “win.” Respect her enough that you won’t let a silly argument won’t ruin your relationship.

3. Be honest with your friend.

When your friend asks for your opinion, be honest. Yes, the truth may sting a little, but nothing like finding you lied to them. Lying makes them feel you don’t respect them or that they can’t handle the truth.

4. Do things for them.

Don’t be the one who is always taking from the relationship and not giving back. Remember that it’s the little things that mean the most. Show up with their favorite Sonic drink or candy bar and they will love you forever!

5. Be a good communicator.

Do not, we repeat, do not be a passive-aggressive friend. If you have a problem, say it! Pouting helps no one.

6. Listen.

If you tend to be the chatterbox of the relationship, take a step back and listen to your friend. Remember, a conversation takes two people, a monologue takes one.

7. Unplug.

We can’t stress this enough. When you do get to spend precious time with your friend, put your phone away giving them 100% of your attention. Is your neighbor’s lunch photo on Instagram really that important?

8. Learn to forgive.

Let’s face it. As in any relationship you have, there will be hurts. If you value the relationship, learn to forgive your friend when they hurt you.

9. Don’t be a flake.

We get it. Everyone is busy these days. But that doesn’t give you a pass to not be able to manage your life and schedule. Make time for them, the reward will be worth it!

10. Be there.

Sometimes our friends go through heart-breaking things, as a best friend, it is your duty to be there for them. Even in the awkward silence, even if you don’t have the right words to say, your presence is more than enough. Be there.
