13 Things Every Southern Girl Should Own: One Amazing Pair of Jeans

Here’s the deal: if you’re a woman living in the great American South (or want to be) (or consider yourself a Southerner) there are a few things that you must own. We’ve narrowed the list down to 13 items of equal importance and will be revealing them over the next couple of weeks. Here’s just one of the things every southern girl should own.

Let’s talk about jeans. If you consider yourself a Southern girl you’ve got ’em. Lots of them. But every southern girl needs to have that one pair they adore.

You know the pair we are talking about. You can be having a terrible day, but the minute you slip on your favorite jeans, you feel all is right with the world again. There isn’t a better feeling. In fact, you are pretty sure these jeans have magical powers. These are your go-to pair of jeans and you would do almost anything to keep them.

This pair of jeans fits like a glove. You wear them with high heels, you wear them with flats and you wear them with your cowboy boots. Tank tops, slinky sweaters, crisp blouses and even blazers work with these jeans. You build entire weekends around them.

This jean is perfect for work or at the bar for a night out dancing and even shopping. You pretty much want to wear them everywhere. Every Southern girl needs a pair of jeans that doubles as her best friend.

Just how does one go about finding this pair of jeans?

It’s all about the fit. You have to fit your body type.

You need:

  • The slight flare of a boot-cut style balances curvy hips and a full bust.
  • A lower rise in front with a contoured waist
  • A longer inseam to make room for a larger backside
  • Cuts that run a size or two bigger in the hips than in the waist – this will prevent the dreaded “gap waist”

You don’t need:

  • Embellishments
  • Whisking
  • A light wash

Pear shape

You need:

  • High rises – they’ll do double duty in balancing out your figure, both lengthening your legs and covering your behind!
  • Cuts that run small in the waist compared to the fit of the hips and thighs – nobody likes a gap waist.
  • Trouser cuts
  • Wider legs in general – bootcuts, flares, etc.
  • Large pockets – preferably without too much detail. You could always draw attention to your best asset (ha!) with some pocket bling, though!

You don’t need:

  • Skinny jeans
  • Front-slash pockets
  • Low-rises

You need:

  • Stretchy fabric
  • Cuts that run generously in the waist compared to the hips
  • Fun, funky pockets – flaps, crystals, crazy stitching – nothing is off-limits when you’re not trying to disguise your behind!
  • A higher rise – these are doubly flattering on you, both lengthening your rather short legs and containing any belly pooch.
  • Bootcut, wide leg, and some skinny cuts. Wide legs will fit your thighs and lengthen the leg (as long as you hem them for heels!), and skinnies will give you curvier hips. With skinnies you’ll want to be careful about the fit of the thighs and calves (both of which are generous on you), so go with a really stretchy fabric and a clean, dark wash, perhaps also pairing them with big boots.

You don’t need:

  • Sympathy, because you can pretty much get away with ANY jean.

You need:

  • Long inseams
  • Skinny cuts. These will add curves and balance out your shoulders.
  • Interesting details, pocket embellishments, fun washes, etc – almost anything goes!
  • A low rise, which will add curves to your butt and tone down the length of your legs

You don’t need:

  • A loose fit – people will stop you on the street offering you food!

Tips for Everyone:

Say no to super low: Higher waistlines are not only practical, they’re also in style this season. They keep your backside covered and eliminate the risk of muffin top!

Think small: When shopping for jeans with a lot of stretch, consider going down a size so they don’t become too baggy as they lose elasticity throughout the day.

Stop fading: To keep dark denim pristine, wash your jeans as infrequently as possible. When you do, turn them inside out and clean in cold water on the gentle cycle, then air-dry.

Now go out and shop to find that perfect pair of jeans that will be your BFF for years to come!
