Oh, high school. The years that are supposedly the best of your life. But don’t let those cheesy high school movies fool you, you’re not crazy for feeling like it’s not all sunshine and daisies — high school is a hard, growing, stretching experience.

While the high school experience is different for everyone, there are definitely things that everyone struggles with. And even though you may feel like the world is crashing down around you, the fact is that things do get better — hang on!

7 Things You Need to Hear When You’re in High School

1. Chances are you’re growing into your looks, not out of them.

Whether you need to gain weight or lose it, the way you look in high school is very rarely the way you stay. If you’re not happy now, just know that chances are that you’re going to grow out of that acne, those braces are going to come off and everything will work out for the better.

2. That outfit probably looks good on you.

While you may not be happy with how you look now, you’re going to look back and realize that you never again had that little cellulite. Moral of the story: wear those shorts. Take risks while it’s still socially acceptable.

3. Get involved.

In life you tend to regret what you didn’t do, not what you did. So pick at least one way to get involved. Even if you end up hating it, you may just make a friend along the way.

4. There’s a good chance you’ll look back and wonder why you were ever so obsessed with that guy.

He’s really not that cool now. And he honestly wasn’t back then either.

5. Eat!

Take the time to pack a great, healthy lunch. Starving throughout the day and then binging on fast food later is just plain dumb and you know it. Take the time to plan ahead and have a healthy relationship with food.

6. Go to that dance/senior breakfast/parade.

It may seem lame now, but you’ll love looking back on the pictures and reminiscing with your friends later.

7. Once you’ve left, nobody cares.

Do what makes you happy in high school, because after it’s all said and done, no one cares. Honestly. No one likes that girl who’s always going on about “back when I was in high school in drama class” stories anyway, so you may as well do what you actually enjoy.
