5 Things To Do When You’re An Adult and Don’t Get a Spring Break


Remember in college when we thought we were like, so busy? Class for 4 hours a day!? College is hard, which is why you need regularly scheduled breaks for beach vacations. Those were the days. Now that you have entered the workforce, vacations are a commodity and Spring Break is a distant memory.

It’s sad. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. There are plenty of things you can do to Make Spring Break Great Again (#MSBGA) even when you have to work.

5 Things To Do When You’re An Adult and Don’t Get a Spring Break:

1. Make a bucket list and start it this week.

Grab a piece of paper, open a new note on your phone and start dreaming. Do you want to write a book? Put it on the list! What about visit every island in the Caribbean? Go for it! This is your list so you can do whatever you want. When you are finished writing, pick one thing and start working towards it. Start saving up for that Europe trip, book a day to go skydiving, start writing the business plan for the business you’ve dreamed of starting…just do something! A small step of commitment can lead to achieving a huge goal. The best part, your great story will start with, “It all started when I had to work during spring break…”

2. Explore your city.

You may be disenchanted with your town, but you probably have only seen it from one perspective. Odds are you have a set routine: you go to work on a particular route, have your typical hangouts, and handful of restaurants you regularly visit. Break the cycle! Spend the evening in that cool neighborhood you’ve never been to. Go to that restaurant you’ve always wanted to try across town. Do the “touristy” thing that the locals never do. Trying something new can help you see your home in a whole new light.

3. Take a day trip.

Don’t let something as small as a work week stop you from traveling. Get out, get some fresh air, and do some exploring! Day Trips have a ton of benefits: they are less expensive, work doesn’t pile up like it would if you were gone for a week, they are surprisingly restful, and it will be easier to get your friends on board. Visit a small town or go hiking in a state or national park. They are closer than you think! For example, the most visited park in the world, The Smoky Mountains, are less than 200 miles from Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville. Recreation.gov is a great place to start your planning.

4. That project you have been putting off, do it.

You know what I’m talking about- that bit of home repair, getting your apartment organized, starting a garden, a hobby that you have always meant to start, or a side hustle that has only partly materialized. Whatever that project is, now is the time to get it done. You are free to spend your time on social media wishing you were on the beach, but nothing is quite as satisfying as checking things off your list.

5. Treat yo’ self.

Get a massage, play a round of golf at the nicer course, spend the night at a fancy hotel downtown. A little luxury can go a long way. You don’t have to go broke doing it either: tools like name your price can save you as much as 60% on hotels that are typically trying to fill space on slow weekdays, you never know what you’ll find on Groupon, and it never hurts to call and ask if a place if offering any deals. In fact, some of my best deals have come from simply asking for them.
