Burgers are a delicious but overdone staple of the 4th of July experience. But if you’re watching your red meat intake, or if your family just isn’t a huge fan of burgers, it can be hard to find something equally as delicious to fill the gaps. Fortunately, these green chili chicken burgers can fill that burger void, and might even become your burger replacement in the process. Check out the recipe below.

  • 1 avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 2 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound ground chicken breast
  • 1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chile peppers, drained
  • 1 fresh jalapeno pepper, seeded if desired and finely diced
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Cheddar cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/3 cup salsa
  • Directions:

Guacamole: Place the avocado, sour cream, cilantro, chili powder, salt, and pepper in food processor and blend until smooth.

Chicken Patties: Mix chicken, chiles, jalapeno pepper, green onion, oregano, salt, garlic powder, and pepper in a large bowl. Form into 4 patties.

Preheat outdoor grill to medium heat.

Oil the grill, and grill each patty for 5 minutes on each side, until well done. Move patties out of main heat and top with a slice of cheddar cheese. Grill buns while cheese is melting.

Spread the bottom of each bun with guacamole, top with shredded lettuce, and a grilled chicken burger. Place one tablespoon of salsa on each burger and serve.
