Halloween calls for some creepy, creative treats. We’ve got some sweet and savory options sure to satisfy all the ghouls and goblins at your next party.
1. Worms in Dirt
1 package of instant chocolate pudding (3.9 oz)
1 tub of Cool Whip (8 oz)
2 cups of milk
1 package of Oreos
Whisk together the pudding mix and milk. Then fold in the Cool Whip. Divide this mixture into 10 – 12 paper or plastic cups and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Crush the Oreos. You can put them in a Ziploc and then use a rolling pin to crush. Top cups with the crushed Oreos and then place several worms coming out of the “dirt”.
2. Pumpkin Cheese Ball
1 lb. shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese
1 8 oz. container cream cheese, softened
1 8 oz. container chive and onion cream cheese
2 tsp. paprika
½ tsp. ground red pepper
1 broccoli stalk
Olive slices, red bell pepper (optional)
You can buy cheddar already shredded, but for a cheese ball, it comes together better if you shred it yourself. Combine all cheese, paprika and red pepper until well blended. Refrigerate for 3 hours or so, until it firms up enough to mold. Make into a ball that looks like a pumpkin. I indent mine a little at the top and use a knife to make vertical grooves down the sides. Use the stalk of a broccoli floret for the stem. If you want to make it look like a jack-o-lantern, you can use toothpicks to affix the olive slices for eyes. Use a paring knife to cut a mouth shape out of the red pepper, and again affix with toothpicks.
3. Halloween Oreo Balls
1 package of Oreos
8 oz. package of cream cheese
1 lb. chocolate candy coating
1 lb. white chocolate candy coating
Orange food coloring
Crush the Oreos and cut the bar of cream cheese into small sections. Place the Oreos and cream cheese in a food processor and pulse until completely combined. Refrigerate for about an hour, until firm. Roll mixture into 30 balls. Place on waxed paper on a cookie sheet. Return to fridge for 20 minutes. Melt chocolate according to package directions. Using a skewer, dip balls in chocolate. Place on waxed paper to cool and return to fridge for 20 minutes. Melt white chocolate according to package directions and then stir in orange food coloring. Dip a fork in the orange colored chocolate and drizzle over the balls for a splatter paint look. Alternatively, you can dip half the balls in the regular chocolate and half in the orange colored chocolate. While still warm, top with Halloween sprinkles. Store in the refrigerator.
Other fun and delicious treats:
Nutter Butter Ghosts: Dip Nutter Butter cookies in melted white chocolate. While still warm, place two mini chocolate chips for eyes.
Mummy Dogs: Cut strips of refrigerated bread dough, such as Crescent dough, and wrap around a hot dog to look like a mummy, leaving the top of the dog exposed like a head. Bake until bread is golden. Place two dots of mustard for eyes. Add one poppy seed on each “eyeball” to really make it look good.
M&M Cookies: Take any favorite recipe for chocolate chip, oatmeal, or monster cookies and add a cup of Halloween colored M&Ms. Cute and easy!
Sugar Cookies: Just like Christmas! Use your favorite sugar cookie recipe and cut out circles, pumpkins and ghosts. Prepare icing in three colors: white, green, and orange. Use sprinkles, licorice strips, and chocolate chips to decorate.
