Nothing’s worse than putting an old, beloved pair of boots out to pasture. It takes time to break in a good pair of boots and, shoot, they’re expensive! But you really shouldn’t have to go through many pairs in your life. With the right care you can extend the life and even restore an old pair to new life. You just have to know the tricks.

First of all, you should be caring for your boots no matter how new they are. You should regularly clean, condition, and polish your boots. It takes less than ten minutes to wipe off the dirt, add a leather conditioner, and buff your boots with a dry cloth and a good cleaning kit will last years.

But what if your boots are old, scuffed up, and haggard? What if you haven’t taken care of them?

Not to worry! The restoration process is simple and looks a lot like the cleaning process.

  1. Clean the boot well with a horsehair brush and, if necessary, a wet rag. If you do get it wet, wait until the boot dries completely before conditioning it.
  2. Use a boot conditioner to restore and soften the leather. This will protect and repair the leather, which if not cared for can crack.
  3. Buff out the leather slowly with your brush.
  4. Add boot cream to scratched and rough areas with a dry rag working it into the leather in small circles. Make sure you have the right color cream!! The wrong color cream could discolor stitching or multicolor designs if you aren’t careful. Let the cream absorb into the leather, then buff with your brush.
Soon, your favorite boots will be better than new!
