We all want to clean our homes well, but at the same time we want to get them done as quickly as possible. If you are committing these common cleaning mistakes, you are wasting your time. And who couldn’t use a little extra time in their day?

Here Are 9 Cleaning Mistakes That Are Wasting Your Time

1. You skip sorting the laundry.

There is more than one way to do this. Find a system that works for you. If you have children, you may want to sort clothes “by child” to make the folding process go more quickly. Or, you can also sort by color to speed up the washing process. And for those who really want to save some time, sort your towels from everything else. This tip prevents lint from building up on them, saving you the lint removal process.

2. You don’t turn the vacuum’s brush off when you vacuum tile or wood floors.

When vacuuming bare floors turn the brushes off, otherwise it just scatters the dirt and dust all over the place. Including the furniture.

3. You wash your windows on sunny days.

This is counterproductive because the heat from the sun causes your cleaner to dry too quickly. That means streaks, which means you need to start over.

4. You don’t adhere to the “top to bottom” rule.

Start at the top of your house when cleaning. You don’t want to do the floors then dust the ceiling fans or top shelves only to have the dust fall to freshly cleaned floors. Up high first, floors last.

5. You forget to let cleaner sit for a few minutes on the surface before you start scrubbing.

Give spray cleaners a few minutes to soak to let them do the work before you start scrubbing away! Letting them sit softens the scum and stains which may mean less elbow grease (and time) is required!

6. You’re still using a lint roller to clean up after pets.

The more efficient way to clean up pet hair is with a damp rubber glove. Simply run your gloved hands over furniture and rugs. You won’t believe how quickly and easily you can remove the fur!

7. You don’t make the family take their shoes off at the door.

If shoes stay on, they are tracking dirt into your home. This builds up over time so put a door mat outside and enforce the “take your shoes off” rule.

8. You are washing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

Obviously you would want to remove any table scraps but don’t bother pre-washing or even rinsing your dishes prior to putting them in the dishwasher. They don’t get any cleaner and it wastes time. Let your dishwasher do all the work!

9. You forget to clean your cleaning tools.

If a mop, dusting cloth or broom is too dirty, they won’t remove or pick up new dirt. Same goes for an overly full vacuum cleaner bag. You’ll just be working harder with little to no results.
