In a world where more and more people are speaking their truth, American Idol alum Chris Daughtry and wife Deanna have decided its time for them to reveal one of their life’s biggest secrets.
Deanna is bi-sexual.
She has known it for a good majority of her life. In fact, before meeting the “Home” hit maker in 2000, she had already experienced relationships with both men and women.
“I didn’t care,” Chris Daughtry tells People magazine in a new interview. “I didn’t feel threatened. I wanted her to be happy with who she was and not hide that or be ashamed.”
But it wasn’t as easy to accept for Deanna.
“I was hiding and shutting down a part of myself and it was causing me to shut down so many good, beautiful things about myself,” she says. “As I built these walls up to protect myself, I was creating a prison, and I couldn’t fully experience life and people couldn’t fully experience me — and it’s all based on fear.”
However, these days, Deanna says she feels much more comfortable opening up about her sexuality, even writing a song alongside her husband called “As You Are” about her experience.
“I really wanted to be vulnerable and say, ‘This is who I am,’” she explains of the song which serves as the brand new single off Daughtry’s latest album Cage to Rattle. “I love me. I hope you will love me, but if you don’t, that’s okay because I still have myself, and I do have people that love me as I am, and that’s all I want.”
