Earlier this summer, U.S. Olympic Skier Bode Miller and his wife, Morgan, went through the unthinkable when their 19-month-old daughter Emeline drowned in a neighbor’s pool. Now, they’ve welcomed new life into their family with the addition of a sweet baby boy, born October 5.

“Exactly one month before Emmy’s 2nd birthday…the sun rose and they knew this day would be different,” the couple’s midwife Lindsey Meehleis told Today. “An overwhelming feeling of joy started to fill a valley of deep grief and sadness.”

Meehlies said the baby boy, whose name has not been shared yet, was born at home in a birth pool. “As Morgan pushed, his head filled Bode’s hands, with one more push, he removed the bag of water that veiled him and caught their baby boy,” she said. “Morgan’s fingers grasped onto their son, who filled such empty arms.”

In a heartbreaking interview following Emeline’s death, Morgan said her first concern aside from coping with the loss of her daughter was how she would manage to bring another baby into the world amid so much grief.

“It was, how am I supposed to bring a new baby into this world, with just losing my baby? Emmy was so excited to be a big sister. She walked around all the time with her baby. And now we have the opportunity to get to love that baby not only for ourselves but for Emmy.”

Since Emeline’s tragic death, Morgan has been dedicated to raising awareness of accidental drownings with children, even sharing a heartbreaking photo from the hospital with her late daughter in her final moments. “I wish I could have one more day to hold you, but until that day comes, continue to work through me and give me the strength to bring awareness, my love,” she shared at the time.
