It’s been ten months since actor and talk show host Cameron Mathison was diagnosed with kidney cancer. In that time, the actor has undergone surgery and declared himself cancer free. Now, the father of two has an bigger appreciation for his first Father’s Day since the diagnosis.
“It almost feels as if it’s the first father’s day of this new era of my life,” Cameron told One Country. “The perspective changes, your awareness in gratitude changes and being present and mindful is heightened now going through a scary time like that.”
In August 2019, Cameron revealed to fans that he has been diagnosed with tumor in his kidney that is consistent with renal cell carcinoma.
“I just felt like something was wrong, it just wasn’t quite right,” Cameron said in a Good Morning America interview on Wednesday (Sept. 11). “The radiology report said that there is a 4.2 centimeter mass on the right kidney that is consistent with renal cell carcinoma. And I’m just standing there thinking to myself, ‘I know this just one of those dreams. I know I’m just about to wake up.’ I really was generally trying to make myself wake up from that moment thinking that this is just so surreal.”
Cameron is dad to two teenagers, daughter Leila and son Lucas, and is looking forward to spending the special day with his family. The 50-year-old sat down with One Country‘s Kelly Sutton to talk about what this father’s day will mean to him.
“My kids are teenagers now and nothing means more to me in my life than being a dad,” Cameron said. “It’s the most important thing, it’s the thing I’m most proud of, it’s the thing that’s taught me the most and this father’s day is going to be better than ever.”
