After news broke Monday (Feb. 18) that Charo’s husband, Kjell, Rasten, died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, the actress/singer issued a statement to media regarding her loving husband of 40 years.

“Yesterday, Kjell, My husband of forty years and the love of my life killed himself, Charo shared in her statement. “There are no words to describe what we are feeling now. He was an amazing man, a great husband and the best father I could imagine to our son. He dedicated his life to loving and supporting his family.”

She went on, “In recent years, his health began to decline and he developed a rare and horrible skin disease called bullous pemphigoid (a chronic blistering of the skin). He also became very depressed. That, along with the many medications he needed to take, became too much for him, and he ended his suffering.”

Charo continued her statement asking fans to reach out to friends or family who are dealing with depression and to let them know they are loved.

“None of us had any idea this could happen to such a wonderful, kind and generous man,” she added.  “Please, if anyone you know and love is suffering from depression or illness, hold them close, tell them you love them with all your heart and that the world is better because they are in it.  Get any help you can.  Suicide is not the answer. Thank you all so much for you love and concern. Thank you.”

Charo’s husband shot himself inside the home he shared with his wife, he was 79 years old. The couple married in 1978 and share a son, Shel Rasten. It was the second marriage for Charo.

Kjell was Charo’s manager but didn’t share the spotlight with his wife. However in 2015 the couple appeared on an episode of the ABC show, “Celebrity Wife Swap,” where Charo swapped spouses with “Love Boat” co-star Jill Whelan.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Charo, their son Shel and the entire Rasten family.
