One of the best parts about Demi Lovato is that she is real. She doesn’t try to hide her mistakes and shortcomings. Instead, she opens up about them for the benefit of others— and that makes her a hero in our book.

The actress and music superstar recently headed to her Instagram page on what would have been the seven-year anniversary of her sobriety. Fans will recall that last July, Lovato was hospitalized for a drug overdose.

“Today I would’ve had 7 years sober,” she wrote on her Instagram story. “I don’t regret going out because I needed to make those mistakes but I must never forget that’s exactly what they were: mistakes.”

Luckily, Lovato has long been able to get the help she needs.

“Grateful that AA/NA never shuts the door on you no matter how many times you have to start your time over,” she continued.  “I didn’t lose 6 years; I’ll always have that experience but now I just get to add to that time with a new journey and time count.”

The Grammy-nominated artist also took the time in the same Instagram post to send out love and direction to any of her fans going through the same thing.

“If you’ve relapsed and are afraid to get help again, just know it’s possible to take that step towards recovery,” she wrote. “If you’re alive today, you can make it back. You’re worth it.”
